We're seriously looking at buying a wakeboard boat to run along side our Ski Nautique on Spring Lake this season.  There are a few options we're looking at, including the usual suspects - the Mastercraft X-2 and Ski Nautique SV211.

One of the rules of Spring Lake enforced by the managing agents on behalf of the lodge owners, is that any boat designed to put out a big wake, or any boat loaded with ballast has to pay a 'slow boat charge' of £3 for every slot.  This money is the re-invested into errosion works on the banks of the lake to stop the tsunami size wave we produce for your wakeboarding pleasure, washing everybody's houses into the lake!  Would you all be happy to pay an extra £3 to ride behind a boat with a monster wake?

Let me have your thoughts!

Will,

thats great news that you're considering it. :D  You have just made two locals very happy at the thought of big boat wakes.  Regarding the fees,  is there a way that a membership deal or bulk buy of tickets can be worked out to keep the price down?  We would MUCH prefer to be spending our cash with you rather than other clubs and would sign up straight away to a membership deal that kept the price down.   How many members a year would you need to pay for the Tsunami fund?

Nice one.

H.

PS.  X2 gets my vote.

Hi Guys!

Have big Harv and 100th Monkey ridden an SV211 because I don't know many people who have?  An X-2 is the first thing that springs to mind when you mention a wakeboard boat, but that's only because it's been marketed more than the SV211.  Don't get me wrong, they are both fantastic boats, but there are so many positive factors involved in getting an SV211:-
  • Reliability
  • Build Quality
  • Engine parts are interchangable with our current boat
  • We can use it for more than just wakeboarding
Bear in mind, it is not for family use (which is what the X-2 is designed for), just look at Thorpe and Princes, they've both ditched their Mastercrafts (the dubbed them 'disaster crafts') and switched them to SV211's because they couldn't stand up to day-in, day-out use.  The vinyl on the MC's seats is very thin compared to the Nautiques, and as anyone who spends any time in a club boat will know, that is a boats weak spot.  Also the Nautique's got snap out carpets which is a great feature, especially with all the gravel we have around.  I've spoken to Steve, who I'm sure you'll all agree is a more than competant boat rided, and he has ridden the SV211 and says it's awesome.

On the positive side, the MC has more Qudos from people who read the mags and hit the forums, meaning perhaps people would be more willing to travel if we had a big black pimpin' X-2 moored up on the dock.

Don't get me wrong, either of these boats would be a huge asset to WMSki, and would help develop us further, just don't get caught up in the Mastercraft hype!

See you all on the dock!

Hi Hemmings,

Bullk books of tickets are on special offer at the moment.  have a look at the website.  They can be bought for as little as £12.50 per tow, meaning with the £3 surcharge (which you would just pay on the day if you preferred), the total cost is £15.50.

Check this out http://www.malibuboats.com/default.aspx?pageID=4&modelID=107

This looks like another possible option.  Official wakeboard boat of the World Wakeboard Championships, so the wake shouldn't be an issue.  Spoke to a couple of people who've ridden it, including Brett and they all give it a massive thumbs up.  Any thoughts?

will this size wake be much more painful to learn on? sounds very exciting but in practice will all new riders end in hospital, or is that your master plan will?!?

Hey Will,

just reading all of the posts on here and thought i would add to it. As you know at oxford we use the x2, awesome boat, awesome wake, awesome quality of everything. the seats are a bit of an issue with club boats as over time you will prob be replacing a few, but you can just buy covers for them or replace them with carpeted wooden panels, not too comfy but the only way round it to keep the cost down. Also because its mastercraft you will be paying a little xtra to buy, but the quality all round is by far the best.

The nautique 211, this is what correct craft call a cross over boat so you can still slalom behind it, but wot is the point wen you have a slalom boat anyway. Because its a cross over boat the hull is different and the wake isnt quite as good but one good thing about this boat is that you have the walkthrough panel at the back saving on damaged to upholstery wen climing back into the boat. In the nautique range i would also consider a 210 as this is a dedicated wake boat. this wake will be quite good for beginners as the wake is quite narrow making it easier to get across. However with alot of weight in this will make the wake quite steep, some will like others wont, this is just one of those prefference things. Good thing is, is that you dont need that much weight to make it massive.

The malibu vlx, awesome boat, good quality through out and tough upholstery. This wake is quite wide compared to the nautique but the shape of the wake is long and smooth making it beginner friendly.  With this boat you will have to put a lot of weight in it to make it really big. But no real issues with that as it will feel big anyway to most, also there is the wedge to help you out if you need it.

Hope this helps.

Dude i'd deff pay an extra £3.00 to ride behind an X2, The nearest x2 for me is the otherside of Oxford but people travel the extra, just cus its an X2. They ballast the boat up for you and all you ever hear people talk about after the session is the Big Fat wake, no one would give a monkeys armpit if the seat had a rip in it. So in my opinion its gotta be an X2. Come on Will, with the super Sick cable, you're half-way there. Only an X2 will do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When was the last time you rode behind an X-2?  What other wakeboard specific boat (X-1, Wakesetter or SV211 etc) are you comparing it to?  You can't all just say X-2 because it's the only wake boat you've heard of!

Let me explain.  When the X-2 first came out, it had the same hull as the X-star, which is Mastercraft's wakeboarding flagship model.  Since late '05 however, the X-2 has SHRUNK.  It's now a whole foot shorter.  Despit what our reassuring partners may tell us, deep down we all know bigger is better!  Now the X-2 and modern X-star look pimped!  They've got all the bells and whistles and shiney things you see in the X-games.  And I can see what you're saying Sullivan, it doesn't matter to you if there's a rip in the seat, however as someone who has been running boat's for club use for over seven years now, I can tell tha's not the case.

You see, for every rip due to design over form and not function, the boat becomes worth less when you come on to re-sell it.  If it costs more money to change a boat, the it doesn't get changed as often and we all ride behind an older boat.  Now this is the clever part.......

Mastercraft have now released an X-1.  The X1 is the full 21ft, and is in fact an X-Star trimmed for club use.  By trimmed, I mean no sub and amp, no board racks and no centre ballast (only rear).  Now if you spec in central ballast (as we are going to) you get the perfect wakeboard boat for club use - The best hull available giving the best wake there is.  A boat for people who want to wakeboard because of wakeboarding, and not because if the fashion involved.

Despite what I've just said in my last sentence, another great thing about ordering a brand new X-1 is that we get to pick the colour!  I feel a new discussion coming on.....

The X-2 is the X-Stars poor relation.  Even part time wakeboarders know that!  We have managed to find a better boat in terms of wake, as well as being better suited for our use.  Go http://www.mastercraft.co.uk/boats.asp?make=1&boat=1.  And I quote -

"the best-selling, most decorated wakeboard boat in history - the same boat that's pulled the X Games and Pro Tour since Day One; the boat Parks Bonifay rode to multiple MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour and X Games titles; the boat that has sent junior riders to the pro level, and given every amateur rider who ever dreamed of landing his first invert at least a fighting chance."

Having spoken to a few people in the know, I'm sold on the idea of this years X1.  As I understand it,  this years X1 has the same hull as the old X2(pre-2006?) .  So that means the same hull as at Oxford - which personally I really like.   The new X2 is awesome but you'll be saving a lot of cash by going for the X1 and the wake is more than good enough.

Colours - it's cheaper to buy shorts to match the boat rather than the other way round.  Now the serious question - what about the music system?

It depends how many pairs of shorts you already own, Steve!  As for the music system, we'll have to ask the lodge owners for their input!!
